UPDATE – The true character of suppressives like Marty Rathbun are masked in many ways; they are expert only in deception and can take on any guise. But be advised:
“Psychotics deal with doing people in. Their whole mission in life is destruction…
…They know if they had the power to torture and kill everyone they would do so.” — L. Ron Hubbard
Marty Rathbun has continuously and systematically worked to re-write his own tenure on staff (and his abysmal failures since) portraying himself as someone who has done “good work.” His view of himself, or at least the one he promotes to those who will listen, is 180 degrees opposite of the true Marty Rathbun.
Even when recounting some of the horrors he visited on other staff members, Marty Rathbun couldn’t bring himself to view them directly and instead wrote about what he himself did in the third person, as though describing the suppressive actions and operating basis of someone else.
L. Ron Hubbard said:
“An SP (suppressive person) is unable to change because he cannot, himself, confront. He is badly “out of valence.” Therefore, not being able to look at things directly, he is unable to erase them or even see what they are. Such people often have a curtain of pictures they look at instead of the universe around them. They do not see a building. They see a picture of a building in front of the building…”
“…They are not at the point from which they view things.”
Here, Marty Rathbun not only dramatizes the above data for all to see, but describes the campaign of destruction he waged when he had the power to do so. It was nothing less than an effort to promote suppressives into positions of control over others, and purge “those who might expose him.”
With a truly Stalinesque malice and coldness of calculation, Rathbun sought out other SPs and set them against honest, producing staff members, conducted corrupt interrogations under the guise of “ethics,” and above all, frantically covered the tracks of his own secret crimes. The first step in dealing with evil is gaining the ability to confront it:
- – -
The Confessions of Marty Rathbun As Told by His Alter Ego
“Oddly enough one of the best ways to detect a Suppressive Person (SP) is that he or she stamps on up statistics and condones or rewards down statistics. It makes an SP very happy…for the good worker to be shattered and the bad worker patted on the back.” — L. Ron Hubbard
Oddly enough Marty Rathbun freely admits to exactly that: covertly shattering good people, systematically rewarding the bad and otherwise wreaking havoc. That he writes in the third person makes this confession all the more chilling and all the more pathetic; for here is someone who could only cast a fleeting glance in the mirror and even then he couldn’t stand looking for very long. Then, too, here is a psychotic forever wondering which one of them knows, which one of them might find out…which one of them is watching from the other side of the mirror.
In short, here is evil and here is madness.
Marty Rathbun on himself:
“Good, fair Sea Org discipline, and LRH justice policies have been undermined by a counter-policy. That counter policy is negotiating with and keeping SPs cooled off instead of dealing with them in accordance with HCO PLs and thus awarding SPs for suppressive acts and protecting them in positions from where they can wreak havoc.
“Recent [investigation] revealed the source of special treatment being given to SPs. It started with Marty Rathbun blowing the Sea Org on November, 1993. Marty took advantage of a number of false reports he had put in place over years giving a false picture as to his role in handling external attacks and the IRS in particular. It was against that false picture of contribution that Marty covertly negotiated a deal to keep his blow quiet and avoid the RPF [Rehabilitation Project Force] in returning to the Sea Org. The web of lies that allowed that arrangement to stay in place is so complex it would take pages to recount. Suffice it to say, refer to a passage from Science of Survival:
“At 1.1 truth receives her severest drubbing. For here, truth is confused, upset, used and twisted, hidden for fear somebody may make retaliation, until one understands that data from this level of the Tone Scale has only two purposes: to wreak the most harm upon others and secure the greatest safety for self. Here we have lies used to hide lies amid the most frantic protestations of honesty and a noisy advertising campaign about the ethics of the speaker. Beneath the façade of honor, honesty, ethics and ‘one’s sacred word,’ one is apt to find a writhing cesspool of vicious and malicious lies calculated to do the greatest possible harm.”
“Marty then engaged in a campaign to covertly and systematically take out and undermine any executive or staff who might expose him. He did this through abusing his privilege to act as a security checker in a trainee capacity. He began the out-tech practice of sec checking people with no formal session set up, and brow beating hair-raising confessions out of them. This resulted in the undermine of at least the following executives, [name], [name], [name] and Amy [Scobee]. *
“Marty concurrently subjected the base to widespread suppression by means of giving special treatment to SPs who were under his charge to handle. This has put cross orderers and enturbulative sources into positions from which they wreaked havoc, and it also undermined discipline and policy.
“Marty authorized [name] to destroy several auditors and enturbulate numerous staff in the year 1997. [She] blew after chopping up her fourth auditor. Marty brought her back. He allowed her into the RPF knowing she was not really up to going on the same terms as everyone. He briefed RPF I/C to be careful with her which lead to her being let off the hook when enturbulating others for engaging in destructive programming and correction. This lead to disintegration of discipline on the RPF, lowering of ethics and technical standards, and a failure of the program to graduate volume products. Marty then vouched for her reform and that she was a full product of the RPF, and had her posted as [an executive]. The destructivity of that action has been well chronicled since.
“Marty took over handling of [name] in August 2000. It was evident [he] was enturbulating everyone in sight and defying any and all authority on the base. Marty cross ordered tech and policy and decided to ‘audit out the aberration’ rather than allowing group justice to take its course. [He] was subsequently allowed to chew up auditors and staff members. Marty covertly allowed [name] back on the base without authorization—giving the impression he was authorized at the highest levels. [He] then spent another six weeks systematically enturbulating base staff members. With Marty away from the base, and no longer there to protect [him], [he] blew the Sea Org for good.”
Signed,
Marty Rathbun
* As it is also characteristic of Suppressive Persons to habitually target the wrong people, it seems Rathbun at least got it inadvertently right when undermining Amy Scobee. A “bad worker” if ever there was one, Scobee was continually on the lookout for that “pat on the back” (if not elsewhere). Although she’s lost some of her vigor, she still serves as the unofficial Gossip Queen of Rathbun’s Posse.

Wow, great article. Nicely put together intro and great quotes.
This bit from freedommag.org was one I was looking for and didn’t find. I forgot the title, etc.
Here’s a link to it if anyone wants:
http://www.freedommag.org/special-reports/cnn/the-confessions-of-marty-rathbun-as-told-by-his-alter-ego.html
He must have had one sensitive trigger, always looking for people who could discover him and always being surrounded by them. People didn’t like him, weren’t impressed by his mannerisms (or manner.) He always had some justification, it seems. He would often use some obscure LRH quote to justify beating people.
][
There will never be another Rathbun – people will report him every day until he is comm ev’d and gone now that the Always Be Vigilant gene has been triggered.
“Even when recounting some of the horrors he visited on other staff members, Marty Rathbun couldn’t bring himself to view them directly and instead wrote about what he himself did in the third person, as though describing the suppressive actions and operating basis of someone else.”
—
Marty is so out of valence that he attributes all of his evil actions to another person.
It’s hard to say if this self confession wasn’t a part of some way of gaining sympathy from Marty Rathbun’s fellow staff and superiors. He probably thought that by confessing as he did, he might be able to play upon the kindness of his seniors to give him yet another chance. But he blew that by blowing yet again. When things get to rough, he does what all psychotic cowards do, run away or cave themselves in.
“In short, here is evil and here is madness.”
That coulda been the title of your blog article here.
Here’s Rathbun admitting how devious and deceptive he is, then you see him acting the same way now but acting like he’s not devious and deceptive. The quote is right, Rathbun is just unable to change.
Marty didn’t just give special treatment to suppressives, he practically tended them like a garden. His better “products” have now blown and joined him. Interesting how he could be so calculating as to spot the other real suppressives around and push them up while pushing decent people down.
He could see people in suppressive valences and promote them but still to this day thinks he’s “not an SP.”
This part ““Marty authorized [name] to destroy several auditors and enturbulate numerous staff in the year 1997. [She] blew after chopping up her fourth auditor. Marty brought her back.”
is just plain unbelievable.
It isn’t just some nut case running around who happens to chop up good staff, it’s a conscious effort to do that.
I don’t see how there can be any doubt how suppressive rathbun is.
Did you say great or Grate? I find reading anything that Marty wrote very grating. Maybe it is his process of thinking, if you can call it that-you can almost hear the gears clanking together as he tries to impress his diversion on the reader.
I get the impression that he worked hardest at presenting wrate and stupid in a unique blend in order to keep people believing that they can’t be witnessing the obvious stupidity, looking for some other explanation.
I think Sharpe meant the intro to the article, which I found great, too. Excellent, applicable LRH quotes. On the last article, people were even commenting about Marty writing in the third person and this quote by LRH on him being out of valence nails it.
It is excellent – the LRH quote “…They are not at the point from which they view things” is a dead ringer for Rathbun.
Teacher or someone said Marty just couldn’t bring himself to say “I did this” and I think that’s what the quote really addresses. He would have to take on his own beingness and take responsibility.
“Here we have lies used to hide lies amid the most frantic protestations of honesty and a noisy advertising campaign about the ethics of the speaker. Beneath the façade of honor, honesty, ethics and ‘one’s sacred word,’ one is apt to find a writhing cesspool of vicious and malicious lies calculated to do the greatest possible harm.”
~~
Now there’s a good description of Rathbun’s blog in two sentences!
In The Antisocial Personality, LRH says many will “freely confess to the most alarming crimes when forced to do so but will have no faintest sense of responsibility for them…”
I don’t know if Rathbun was “forced to” but the rest is certainly applicable.
Those are perfect quotes to describe Rathbun and what he did. Anyone who thinks Rathbun has good intentions should read this.
But, knowing Rathbun, I’m sure he’ll say this strange confession was made under duress. He’ll have to assign cause elsewhere as usual.
He really is not at the point from which he views things.
This is a trap. We’re trying to put logical explanations into a insane person’s actions. Good intentions while he held the pen who wrote this. Sure, he wanted to have good intentions so that the ghost of some Christmas past didn’t jangle anymore chains at him.
It’s amazing that Rathbun would quote this passage from Science of Survival:
It’s as though “Marty Rathbun” could see how that “Other Marty Rathbun” over there was operating. Hell, it’s practically his playbook in life. It perfectly describes what he did when he was on staff, and it sure as hell describes him to a T today.
On the surface, yeah, it is unbelievable. It stretches one’s confront to think someone could be that calculating in their evil intentions and actions. But in Rathbun’s case it applies more that with anyone else I’ve run into in my tenure in the Church.
Rathbun’s made a practice of committing suppressive acts that are verbatim what LRH talks about in policy, and people tend to pooh-pooh them when you point them out, or try to explain them away, or get “reasonable” about his intentions, etc.
This write up by Rathbun really does show his malice aforethought and just plain bold intention to commit suppressive acts.
That must have been Rathbun’s priority when he was on staff – squash those who he thought might expose him.
There’s somewhere LRH talks about people attacking Scientology because they know or think Scientologists can FIND OUT.
This sounds like an extreme dramatization of that.
“…some way of gaining sympathy from Marty Rathbun’s fellow staff and superiors. …”
][
That is as good a guess as any. Of course, being Marty’s action, you know there was a lie in there. So it is for appearances no matter what.
i love that LRH quote about an sp not being able to confront or change. Anyone know what policy or bulletin this is from?
Title? That could have been paragraph 1, 2 and 3. And responses 1, 2 and 3.
I was wondering how you “authorize” someone to “destroy several auditors” anyway – did he give it to her in writing or did he sit her down and say “go chop that guy up” or something like that. Did he send her in on “mission”? Wow.
We then made us be I could you is then they was they that they we it did they then it they was it. It. I told you so. It. They.
That’s from a basic PTS/SP policy called “How to Detect SPs as an Administrator.”
“Rathbun is just unable to change.”
][
What a horrid thing to say about him. I have watched him get worse for weeks and weeks now, and from histories told by those who knew him when, he seems just as horrid a person but less capable of keeping it together. Less capable, dwindling spiral change.
Marty plays the “duress” card a lot. Whenever others can see him screwing up, he blames duress from others. Like the cops in New Orleans, those awful luxurious sabbaticals on the beach in Aruba, people actually asking him direct questions, etc.
Amazing concept Sharpe. I’ve seen that in the garden sometimes; ants tending to aphids.
“Rathbun’s made a practice of committing suppressive acts that are verbatim what LRH talks about in policy…”
][
So right you are Sharpe. Except, as you say, if I were to show them as demos on a course, my twin would call over the supervisor and report me for not demo’ing realistic scenarios.
“With a truly Stalinesque malice and coldness of calculation”
Nice turn of phrase, by the way.
Isn’t that amazing. It is like what you see in Mafia movies, telling the kid to shot someone so that they are forever under your thumb and the kid is forever lost.
It is no wonder Rathbun is so out of valence, he is too very very much thick with serious overts.
I say even if Rathbun was able to explain this all to his new friends in some way so it wouldn’t look so downright stupid, they would still be looking at him like a damaged wierdo which is what he has to be.
I keep thinking that his mother getting electric shock when she was pregnant had something to do with damaging this boy.
“He would have to take on his own beingness and take responsibility.”
][
Another good way to look at the whole concept of him writing in 3rd person Philo. Thanks for pointing it out. We can test this theory in about 10,000 years when Marty crawls out of the rock his is encysting himself into.
Sensitive trigger is one way to put it. I see the image of a very fearful individual, afraid at all times of being found out and becoming unsafe. His entire environment must have been dangerous to him at all times.
Rathbun’s actually still trying to chop up auditors, if you read his rants on his blog. when he first tried to take over the indies he chopped up pierre ethier who was an opinion leader for a lot of squirrels. marty’s not just a squirrel, he works really hard to destroy people actually applying the tech to others, it’s an obsession with him.
You see that in the blame he casts out. Even when he admits to evil actions, he places responsibility elsewhere. There’s just no way this guy will ever as-is anything.
Now you can see why Rathbun doesn’t believe in pulling withholds. or any withhold tech for that matter…
You can imagine Rathbun going through his day like an exposed nerve wondering who might be finding out. No wonder he kept blowing.
Nice, thanks. There are other articles in that same section about him that are worth a read. Too bad his little band haven’t read these things, they would be ashamed to be associated with him.
They do not see a building. They see a picture of a building in front of the building…”
.
And, when they do see a picture of a building when they’re standing right in front of it, they ask “what is this place?”
rathbun is decrepit, and we can see how he got there. he was holding positions on staff worrying about who “might expose him”???
that tells you right there how filthy he was.
Anyone who looks at what he says now in pt, without even looking at these past actions, can tell how suppressive he is. If they don’t they are probably suppressive themselves, or on the edge of flipping into an SP valence.
That’s another SP characteristic, and he doesn’t just think that, he’s convinced he’s not SP, per the write up from Sig last year. There’s no doubt in his mind.
There is nothing that Rathbun has done that would alarm me any more. The same is true regarding Caberta. She would make us all not exist over here if she could do that.
What is most clear is that it was a very good day when Marty Rathbun was blown off the lines for good. A madman like this inside the Church with power to do the evil things he did to other staff is an extreme danger, and is yes very much like Stalin.
Even when he does come close to saying “I did this” he blames it on someone else. He went into tears over it in Germany. Of course it wasn’t his fault that he was assaulting, punching, choking people. Poor Marty, always effect.
Perfect, lol.
It’ll never happen.
It’s business like this that makes it hard to fathom how Rathbun and Rinder could think they can make people think they are honorable people. Rinder was just about as slimy as the Rat in undemining decent staff from what I understand.
Just hilarious…and true.
Maybe if Ratbun paid attention when he was on staff instead of trying to choke the life out of people he might have been able to figure out what that place was…
“Marty just couldn’t bring himself to say “I did this””
~
I can perceive the wall of mass from where I am that stops Marty from being able to say this, and I’m nowhere near Texas.
Vince is probably well trained. That was well spotted.
I don’t see him crawling out. Maybe an end run, like flipping into the valence of a sweet old irish setter, with absolutely no memory.
Great or Grating, it would take a person pretty far gone to write and submit a document that is supposed to be about oneself, taking 1st person responsibility, and keep it droning on and on in the 3rd person. It actually was a great accomplishment in lunacy to be that grating. And Rathbun was up to the task. I doubt if he could hold it together that long these days. He seems pretty bag-lady drenched in his own urine whenever I read his writings anymore.
Please don’t say that. I was so hoping that Rathbun would as-is himself.
When I think of the movie of Rathbun doing the BagLady routine, spitting and mumbling to himself as he walked in circles for 20 minutes, I think that Rathbun already doesn’t exist. Do did the Cowberta just pull him lower than nothing?
I admit, if I woke up and found myself with all the problems and errors in judgement that Rathbun has lathered on himself, I would be pretty “duressed” too. Of course, I would have come clean long ago, and not be acting the coward and blaming everyone else for what I caused either.
Good point JimmyD. Of course chocking the crap out of other people apparently was his full-time vocation.
Marty’s behavior is completely, absolutely, unequivocally justified. In short, he did wrong but he had no choice. He’s like a bad country western song.
In his defense when you are out on the beach and someone asks you a question . . .well the pressure, the stress is unimaginable. No wonder he went south. What a loser!
Talk about pressure. Imagine having those withholds. It’s a wonder he didn’t combust.
Makes me shiver just to think about it for a moment. I suppose someone who has been sucking in the anti-social sauce to justify previous anti-social action will be just like any drunk with demons everywhere. That environment of threat is all of Marty’s making.
Fear can thus a mighty asshat make…You can quote me on that Marty.
Yes yes. Our Vince is doing that a lot lately. Brings a smile to my face when reading about such a dour person.
That goo must get in his eyes, ’cause more overts is not the solution to more overts. Unless, maybe he wants to be a rock for 10,000 years. Hmmm. Not a bad solution then, eh?
There is always a deeper truth and a deeper lie inside The Marty. But that last point is certainly a kicker and could certainly explain his constant freak-outs to violence.
Way to go Teacher. “Like an exposed nerve” may be the best ever discription of the life of Marty.
Nice idea Christine but until he sees himself for what he really is he’ll be stuck. Not likely to happen soon. ever.
It will take some time for Marty to let loose of his lies. After all he still blames others for what he did.
Damn, love that quote!
More than that – he’s engaged in ” a noisy advertising campaign about the ethics of the speaker.”
It’s all doubling-down as the saying goes, with both Rat and Rin. You can’t keep up with the daily justifiers.
“And, when they do see a picture of a building when they’re standing right in front of it, they ask “what is this place?””
—
That is the astute comment of the week. Very well said!
“We then made us be I could you is then they was they that they we it did they then it they was it. It. I told you so. It. They.”
—
Wow – its so difficult to follow Marty’s mis-attributions it takes a demo kit.
The quote says: …They know if they had the power to torture and kill everyone they would do so.” and it certainly looks to me that this is what Rathbun wants to dramatize in the video you are showing here. It looks like he has a very hard time holding himself back.
It is only the “ethics” of the law which must restrain him.
They don’t mention it. You would think these two guys were just honest angels trying their best during their tenure inside. They are victims who complain about what was done to them, and how bad it all is. Casting blame elsewhere is a constant. Speaking in ARC break generalities is their modus operandi, often subtly masked by mixing in details of specific things said or done. The susceptible are their only audience. Nary a one has read or understood the Third Party Law.
What a concept. I have thought of Rathbun taking the rock route for so long now that I can’t imagine him as an integrated system anymore. Why? Because I can’t think of him as an integrated system any less.
The plus on that is that as long as Rat and Rin put BLAME on someone else, they are electing them CAUSE. That makes RatRin EFFECT of course. There’s a great chapter on this in Handbook for Preclears.
Rathbun is pretty much all mass these days. Only a little cut out with a due date that is dangerously close.
You can tell that they actually are embarrassed by how much violently they assert their point of view. These are all desperate people.
It was on the sly until the end.
Yeah, well, a girl can hope. I thought that, Rathbun being so incompetent in so many ways that he might make a mistake and in a flash of knowing…well, you know the rest.
He’s still “Stalinesque” but he’s pretending to be Ghandi-esque, or Bhudda-esque.

The old, “Do you believe me or your lyin’ eyes?” With Rathbun, you better believe your lyin’ eyes, ’cause you know he is not capable of telling the truth.
Good point out and in. Logic says that he would, since he has gross errors in the area and has to 1) justify them and 2) commit more violence in the area. He just can’t help it; he’s a Rathbun.

But what if their question required the truth, yet the truth would actually benefit Rathbun. We know he is going to lie, we know that he has to lie, but it is so amazing to watch. It must cause some turmoil in him as well.
That does really work. Except that a nerve is connected to other tissue and back to a computing point. Rathbun is not connected and he is entirely stim/response.
Maybe if he named his blog The Daily Justifiers, at least there would be one iota of truth on the page every day!
They are only listened to by people who have abandoned their honor, or never had any in the first place.
I don’t care what “credentials” some of these people submit; they have joined a group who have teamed up with some of the worst suppressives in our history, and are actively supporting them. You can’t be half-way pregnant. You either support Ursula Caberta and other outright Scientology squashers or you don’t. Supporting Rathbun/Rinder is also supporting her and Bunker and Ortega, and government inquisitions, and entheta media and all other efforts to suppress us out of existence.
..
The crap about “independently” practicing Scientology and being true to it’s precepts and the Tech is just that – crap. Anyone who isn’t filthy with transgressions can see that with one eye open.
“And, when they do see a picture of a building when they’re standing right in front of it, they ask “what is this place?””
.
Rathbun has so many moments to live down. He should have had a jacket on like you see in those FBI shows. It would say, “Insider”. He is soooo exposed.
In a sense, one of the things that we are actually seeing is a combusted person. All the carbon parts are still unscrambled, but everything else is, and the carbon parts are only hanging on.
His leaving is like a springtime shower, lemon gelato to the Common Palate.
If Rathbun seems restrained, it is only because you haven’t watched long enough. He can justify anything and must do anything he can to prove everyone but himself wrong.
That’s very funny, and I could see it. But I see Rathbun more like a fish, looking for some human to talk to him.
Rathbun’s quote about the 1.1 is really applicable to this here. Just another noisy protestation.
He has a small group of supporters who are trying to all kid themselves that isn’t happening. In fact, they’re “moving higher.” No drug or alcohol jokes, please.
Far gone is right. The word desperate also comes to mind, but the word “calculating” is one I can’t dismiss. I see the wheels turning all the time with Rathbun. Same with Rinder, but Rathbun takes the prize. He “calculates” dawn to dusk.
So, this just tells me how moronic he was/is. His calculation didn’t work, didn’t pay off.
..
The other possibility that I thought of was that this was something he left behind in error, and was him writing in his journal in a novel way, trying to confront his overts (somehow, anyhow) so maybe he could get gain. Lord knows, he never was able to get gain the conventional in-Tech way. He certainly couldn’t turn himself in for a standard O/W session or sec check because word would have gotten out and he would have lost prestige.
Plus, he knew how HE violated the sanctity of the confessional with others and was afraid someone would do the same with HIS data. So the standard route to gain for someone as heavy with O’s as Rathbun is just wasn’t open to him.
..
If that’s true, it’s as sad as it gets; obliterating one’s future for fear of loss of status.
Not to mention the mockery of auditing that he engages in with others, pronouncing them OT5, life repair, Grade 0, etc., without any of the basics in.
I haven’t met anyone on this planet who could complete a single level without good O/W processing, whether they are newbies or old vets. We know Rathbun avoids that like the plague, and in fact that tech isn’t even real to him.
That sounds as if it might have been directly translated from the Latin (except for the colloquialism “asshat.”)
On the surface it would seem that Marty does not look inward but in reality that’s all he does. A justified existence is a very sad thing to see.
Every word uttered by Marty is a protest of his own overt acts. It’s no wonder that he protest so often and so loudly. It’s an indication of the number and seriousness of his overts.
